Canada imposes new sanctions on Russia targeting energy, military, cyber sectors

12 November 2025 18:53

Canada has announced a new round of sanctions against Russia aimed at increasing economic pressure over Moscow’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

New measures, unveiled on November 12 by Foreign Minister Anita Anand, target Russia’s energy revenues, financial enablers, and military capabilities, including its drone and cyber programs, Caliber.Az repers per the Canadian Foreign Ministry

The latest sanctions list 13 individuals and 11 entities, several of which are connected to the development and deployment of Russia’s drone program. According to the Canadian government, the move reinforces Canada’s leadership in disrupting the military technologies Russia relies on to gain an advantage on the battlefield.

For the first time, Canada has also sanctioned entities that provide cyber infrastructure used in Russia’s hybrid warfare operations against Ukraine. In addition, several Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) companies were targeted, along with 100 vessels from Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet,” which Ottawa says is used to circumvent existing energy sanctions.

The measures align closely with recent sanctions announced by the United States, the European Union, and the United Kingdom, reflecting a coordinated G7 effort to tighten economic pressure on Moscow.

“Canada remains unwavering in its commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and its people, who are forcefully defending their rights in the face of Putin’s corrosive and aggressive actions. Canada will continue to intensify pressure through sanctions in coordination with allies and partners until Russia puts an end to its unjustified invasion of Ukraine,” Anand said.

Ottawa emphasised that the sanctions were developed in direct response to Ukraine’s priorities and will continue to evolve as part of broader international efforts to isolate Russia economically and weaken its ability to sustain its war.
