Canada to deliver NASAMS air defence system to Ukraine ahead of schedule PHOTO
Canadian Defence Minister Bill Blair has announced that Canada will soon be delivering a NASAMS (National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System) air defence system to Ukraine.
This follows a previous commitment to provide the advanced medium-range system by early 2025, as reported by Ukrinform on November 21, Caliber.Az reports via Ukrainian media.
Blair stated that Canada had been working in close coordination with American partners and the system’s manufacturer, Raytheon, to assemble and facilitate its delivery. He confirmed that the system is currently in Poland and is soon to be transported across the border to Ukraine.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau informed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy about the imminent delivery of the NASAMS system during a recent phone conversation. Blair further highlighted Canada's collaborative efforts with Ukrainian authorities to ensure the swift transfer of the system, with more details expected to be released soon.
This move follows Canada's continued support for Ukraine in its defence against Russian aggression. In August, Canada confirmed that Ukraine could deploy Canadian-supplied tanks and armoured vehicles within Russian territory.
To date, Canada has provided significant military aid, including:
-
Eight Leopard 2A4 tanks
-
Dozens of armoured combat support vehicles
-
Hundreds of armoured patrol vehicles
-
Several M-777 howitzers
