Casualties mount in Venezuela as earthquake death toll hits 2,295
The death toll from the earthquake in Venezuela has risen to 2,295, while 11,267 people have been injured, National Assembly Speaker Jorge Rodríguez said during a briefing.
“As of today, there are <...> 11,267 injured,” he announced.
According to Rodríguez, the number of people left homeless has reached 12,841. In total, 26,403 people have been affected by the disaster’s consequences, including physical injuries and psychological trauma, as well as the loss or severe damage of their homes.
The devastating twin earthquakes struck Venezuela on June 24, 2026, near Veroes in Yaracuy state.
These were a doublet event with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5 occurring just seconds and kilometres apart along faults in northern Venezuela where the Caribbean plate moves relative to the South American plate.
The shallow quakes caused widespread building collapses, especially in La Guaira and Caracas, and have been called the country's deadliest in over a century, with significant aftershocks continuing.
