CBC: Ten dead in school shooting in Canadian town
As many as ten people, including the suspected gunman, have died following a mass shooting in the rural Canadian community of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, police have said.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said six victims were found dead inside Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, Caliber.Az reports via CBC.
Another person died while being transported to the hospital, while two more victims were discovered dead at a nearby residence.
Police confirmed the suspected attacker was also found dead inside the school from what officers described as a self-inflicted injury. Authorities said they believe they have identified the suspect but warned that establishing a clear motive may never be possible.
The shooting prompted officials to issue a shelter-in-place order across Tumbler Ridge and neighbouring areas, urging residents to remain indoors while emergency services responded. The order was lifted later after police secured the scene.
Investigators said the incident ranks among the deadliest school shootings in Canadian history. Emergency crews, including paramedics and crisis response teams, were deployed to assist victims, families and members of the community.
Local officials have not yet released the identities of those killed, pending notification of relatives. Schools in the district are expected to remain closed while authorities continue their investigation.
Community leaders have expressed shock at the scale of the violence in the small northern British Columbia town, which has a population of fewer than 3,000 residents. Support services have been made available for students, staff and families affected by the tragedy.
Police said the investigation remains ongoing and urged anyone with information to come forward.
