German candidate for chancellor makes unexpected visit to Ukraine
Leader of Germany's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and candidate for chancellor Friedrich Merz has made an unexpected visit to Kyiv, Ukraine.
The politician is scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, although the agenda of their discussions has not been disclosed, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
On December 2, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz visited Ukraine. In a message to Russian President Vladimir Putin from Kyiv, he promised that Germany would continue supporting Ukraine. Scholz confirmed that Germany would maintain its deliveries of air defense systems, howitzers, and combat helicopters to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Following his visit to Kyiv, Scholz made a statement regarding the Taurus missiles and reiterated that he would not provide Ukraine with long-range Taurus cruise missiles.
"I will continue doing everything in my power to prevent escalation and avoid a war between Russia and NATO," he said.
Scholz noted that his decisions remain unequivocally correct.
"We will not allow the use of dangerous weapons we've provided to strike deep into Russian territory. This also applies to cruise missiles," the chancellor emphasised.
