China urges Paraguay, others to cut ties with Taiwan
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun has called on governments maintaining diplomatic relations with Taiwan’s administration to make the right political choice and sever such ties as soon as possible.
Jiakum made the remarks during the Ministry’s press briefing on October 20 commenting on a senior Paraguayan official's call for debate on establishing diplomatic, trade, and economic relations with China, Xinhua reports.
“We urge governments of certain countries, including Paraguay, to assess the situation soberly, listen to the voice of visionary figures, heed the will of their people, and make a timely political decision that aligns with their fundamental and long-term interests,” Guo said, as quoted by the agency.
He emphasised that the one-China principle is a widely recognized international consensus and a basic norm of international relations, adding that maintaining so-called “diplomatic relations” with the Taiwan administration is a dead end with no way out.
