Hungarian opposition warns: Orban could lead Hungary out of EU
Péter Magyar, leader of the Hungarian opposition party Tisza, has warned that Hungary could leave the European Union if the ruling Fidesz party, led by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, wins the upcoming elections.
In a video statement posted on Facebook, Magyar said that the Fidesz leadership is considering a coalition with Mi Hazánk (“Our Homeland”), which supports Hungary’s exit from the EU. He warned that such an alliance could effectively set the country on a path toward leaving the bloc.
Magyar added that the very idea of the coalition suggests Fidesz is not confident of its election victory.
He also highlighted that Prime Minister Orbán’s ties with Russia have eroded trust in Hungary among European partners. “The question now is not only whether Hungary might exit the EU, but whether the EU itself might decide to leave Hungary out of the union,” he said.
Magyar stressed that the parliamentary elections on April 12 will be decisive, effectively serving as a referendum on Hungary’s future EU membership.
