Pistorius: Germany won’t be pulled into Iran war
German Defence Minister, Boris Pistorius, has described the war involving Iran as an economic “catastrophe,” warning of its far-reaching impact on global markets while reiterating that Germany does not consider itself a party to the conflict.
Speaking to reporters during a visit to Australia, Pistorius said: “To make it crystal clear, this war is a catastrophe for the world's economies.”
He stressed that Berlin had not been consulted prior to the outbreak of hostilities and made clear that Germany does not intend to become involved. “Nobody asked us before. It’s not our war, and therefore we don’t want to get sucked into that war,” he said.
At the same time, the defence minister indicated that Germany would be prepared to contribute to post-conflict stabilisation efforts once conditions allow. He added that Berlin stands ready to help secure any peace arrangement that may be reached and called for a ceasefire as soon as possible.
Pistorius made the remarks as part of a week-long trip to the Indo-Pacific region, which includes Australia, where he is holding meetings on security and defence cooperation.
