CNN: Sources contradict Trump’s claim that Qatar offered Boeing 747-8 as "gift"

20 May 2025 19:32

The Trump administration initially reached out to Qatar to explore acquiring a Boeing 747 jet that could serve as a temporary Air Force One, sources told CNN, challenging President Trump’s claim that Qatar had offered the plane as a “gift.”

After taking office in January, the Pentagon contacted Boeing but was informed that the new Air Force One planes wouldn’t be ready for another two years. Seeking a faster replacement, the Air Force began exploring alternatives, while Trump assigned Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff to identify viable aircraft options.

Boeing then provided a list of clients with suitable planes, including Qatar. The Pentagon initiated talks with Qatar about leasing or potentially buying one of their 747-8 jets, with Qatar reportedly open to selling. The White House backed these discussions, and Witkoff helped facilitate initial contacts.

Despite this, Trump portrayed the potential deal as a generous, free “gesture” from Qatar’s royal family, saying on Truth Social it would be a temporary replacement and eventually displayed at his presidential library. However, sources clarify that the U.S. government initially made the inquiry.

The deal sparked controversy, with Democrats and some Republicans opposing it on ethical grounds, and lawmakers threatening to block weapons sales to Qatar. Boeing remains behind schedule on delivering the new Air Force One planes, which are now expected by 2027, five years later than planned.

In February, Trump toured the Qatari plane at Palm Beach and praised its luxury. The Pentagon has deferred comments to the White House, which emphasised any transfer would be a formal government-to-government arrangement between the U.S. and Qatari Ministries of Defence.

Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani described the process as an ongoing legal review between the two governments and stressed Qatar’s willingness to help if it is legal and appropriate.

Legal teams on both sides continue to work out the terms, with no final decision yet. Though the plane’s estimated value was about $400 million, its worth has depreciated.

Retrofitting a second-hand foreign government aircraft with the necessary security and communication systems to serve as Air Force One is an enormous challenge. Experts warn it could take up to two years and cost significantly more than the plane itself. The overhaul requires stripping the plane to its frame and rebuilding it with top-secret equipment, raising concerns about feasibility and risk.

Trump has expressed frustration with Boeing’s delays and indicated openness to buying and converting a used plane as an alternative. The two new Boeing 747-8s intended to permanently replace Air Force One remain scheduled for delivery in 2027, which may still be subject to changes.
