COP29: EU envoy urges wealthy nations to step up climate finance efforts
The primary goal at COP29 in Baku must be to reach an agreement on more favourable terms, stated EU Special Envoy for Climate and Environment, Anthony Agotha, in an interview with local media.
Agotha emphasised that the world is currently facing a complex situation, and the key objective for all parties at COP29 is to secure an agreement under better conditions, Caliber.Az reports.
The Special Envoy highlighted the European Union's significant role as a major donor in climate finance, stating, "We are determined to maintain our leadership. However, we believe that other wealthy nations must also recognise their responsibility and join this effort. Together, we are working to raise more funds to support vulnerable countries, which have suffered the most from the climate crisis."
He noted that the climate crisis continues to escalate, causing significant damage. However, Agotha pointed out that this challenging situation also presents governments with a substantial opportunity to move away from fossil fuels and build a sustainable, "green" economy.
"By adopting a circular economy, we can make the health of our planet a priority, while also ensuring the well-being and prosperity of all people," the diplomat concluded.
