COP29 to adopt Declaration on Green Digital Action in Baku
Azerbaijan's Ministry of Digital Development and Transport has announced that a COP29 Declaration on Green Digital Action will be adopted during the UN Climate Change Conference to be held in Baku on November 11-22.
The declaration will be endorsed by governments, international organisations, financial institutions, charitable organisations, the private sector, non-governmental organisations, and academic circles, Caliber.Az reports.
In adopting the declaration, the parties will express their commitment to recognising the role of digital technologies in mitigating climate change, achieving set goals, and supporting the objectives of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Paris Agreement, and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The parties will highlight the positive impact of the proper use of digital innovations in reducing greenhouse gas emissions across various economic sectors and adapting to climate change. They will also address the need to resolve issues related to environmental damage caused by outdated digital infrastructure.
Additionally, digital inequality will be emphasised as a major obstacle to achieving fair, inclusive, and digital transitions.
Note that, COP29 in Baku presents a critical opportunity to accelerate global action on climate change. The event, running over two weeks, will gather around 70,000 to 80,000 attendees, including government leaders, business figures, and civil society representatives, to address the climate crisis driven by rising global temperatures and extreme weather events.
A key focus will be on securing the trillions of dollars needed to cut greenhouse gas emissions and protect vulnerable populations. COP29 will also mark a key moment for nations to submit updated climate action plans under the Paris Agreement, aimed at limiting global warming to 1.5°C and supporting the Sustainable Development Goals.
