Pride and power: Azerbaijani Army commemorates its legacy on Armed Forces Day

The Azerbaijani Army marked June 26– Armed Forces Day with a series of solemn and celebratory events held across various branches of the military, including troop formations, units, the United Combined Armed Forces Army, and specialized military educational institutions.

The commemorations began with a minute of silence in memory of National Leader Heydar Aliyev and the martyrs who gave their lives for the defence of the homeland. This was followed by the playing of the National Anthem of Azerbaijan, setting a respectful and patriotic tone for the day’s observances, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

Throughout the events, speakers reflected on the historical evolution of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces, highlighting its establishment as a regular army under a unified command structure—a legacy attributed to the vision and leadership of Heydar Aliyev.

Participants also praised the current strength and readiness of the Azerbaijani military, crediting President Ilham Aliyev, the country’s Supreme Commander-in-Chief, for shaping an army with high combat effectiveness. This, they emphasized, was a decisive factor in the victory during the Patriotic War, which resulted in the liberation of Azerbaijan’s occupied territories.

In military units across the country, the defence minister’s congratulatory message was read out to personnel. Celebratory programs included roundtable discussions, conferences, museum visits, book and photo exhibitions, art displays, and screenings of documentary and feature films. Special concerts were also organized for servicemen, fostering a festive atmosphere.

In a gesture of remembrance and respect, military delegations visited the graves of fallen soldiers and met with the families of martyrs, reaffirming the nation's enduring gratitude for their sacrifice.

Service members who distinguished themselves in the line of duty were officially recognized and awarded during the ceremonies.

The significance of Armed Forces Day was also observed internationally, with Azerbaijani diplomatic missions abroad holding ceremonial receptions attended by high-ranking foreign officials and dignitaries, underscoring Azerbaijan’s commitment to honoring its military legacy both at home and on the global stage.
