Spanish court forces PM’s wife to hand over passport in probe move

22 June 2026 16:24

A judge has ordered Begoña Gómez, the wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, to surrender her passport as part of precautionary measures imposed in connection with criminal proceedings launched against her.

Judge Juan Carlos Peinado summoned Gómez to appear in court on June 24 at 18:00 local time (20:00 Baku time) to hand over the document, Caliber.Az reports via Spanish media.

On June 20, Peinado ordered the opening of formal proceedings against Gómez. As part of the measures imposed, she has been required to surrender her passport and is prohibited from leaving Spain.

The investigation into the prime minister’s wife began in 2024. She is suspected of embezzlement, influence peddling, misappropriation, and business-related corruption.

Prosecutors had sought to have the case dismissed and warned that they would seek the acquittal of the suspects if the court decided to proceed with the trial.

Meanwhile, the far-right association Hazte Oír, which filed the complaint against Gómez, has requested a 24-year prison sentence.
