Cuba honored to become BRICS partner state — president
Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel expressed his pride in his country's new status as a partner state of BRICS.
In a message on his X account, he stated, "Cuba is honoured to join the BRICS as a partner state," describing the acronym as a symbol of hope for Southern countries striving for a more equitable, democratic, and sustainable international order, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.
Due to a significant energy crisis and the need to address the aftermath of Hurricane Oscar, Diaz-Canel could not attend the summit in person, delegating the representation to Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla.
In his own message on X, Rodriguez emphasized Cuba's commitment to working collaboratively with all BRICS member states to uphold multipolarity, peace, and international law, while also advancing a development agenda that benefits the Global South.
BRICS, established in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, welcomed South Africa in 2011. As of January 1, 2024, Egypt, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia are set to become full members of the group.
The 16th BRICS Summit, a highlight of Russia's chairmanship in the organization, took place in Kazan from October 22 to 24. On the second day of the summit, participants adopted the Kazan Declaration, which addresses key issues such as the association's development, its stance on global challenges, and the resolution of regional crises, including those in Ukraine and the Middle East.
