Cyprus detains suspected Hamas operative sought by Germany
Cypriot authorities have arrested a suspected member of Hamas, wanted by German prosecutors for acquiring weapons and ammunition potentially intended for attacks on Israeli or Jewish targets, European Pravda reports.
According to German federal prosecutors, the suspect, identified as Kamel M. and born in Lebanon, was detained on March 6 at Larnaca Airport following his arrival from Lebanon.
Prosecutors said the arrest relates to the transport of approximately 300 live rounds. The exact origin and intended use of the ammunition remain under investigation.
“The operation may have been preparation for attacks by Hamas on Israeli or Jewish institutions in Germany and Europe,” prosecutors noted.
Police also searched Kamel M.’s Berlin apartment. After his extradition to Germany, a judge will decide on his pretrial detention.
