Czechia records lowest birth rate on record
In 2025, Czechia’s population rose slightly to 10.915 million, an increase of 6,300 people, driven entirely by international migration, according to the Czech Statistical Office.
Natural population change remained negative, with deaths exceeding births by a record 35,700—the largest gap since 1919.
The number of live births fell to 77,600, the lowest on record, declining 8% from 2024. Births dropped across all birth orders, with the highest number of children born to women aged 31. Around 47% of children were born outside marriage, slightly lower than the previous year.
Marriages also fell to historic lows, with 42,500 couples tying the knot—the fewest since World War I—while divorces increased slightly to 21,200, affecting over 20,300 children. Total deaths rose modestly to 113,300, with women making up the majority.
Overall, Czechia’s demographic growth continues to rely on migration, as natural decline persists amid record-low fertility and marriage rates.
