Damascus governor advocates for peaceful relations with Israel

27 December 2024 19:26

In an exclusive interview with US media, Maher Marwan, the Governor of Damascus and representative of Syria’s new leadership under President Ahmed al-Sharaa, spoke about the Syrian government’s plans for establishing peaceful relations with Israel.

Marwan’s comments come nearly three weeks after rebel factions ousted the Assad regime, with the new government keen on reshaping Syria's international relationships, Caliber.Az reports.

Marwan discussed Syria's position on its neighbor, Israel. He acknowledged that Israel's concerns were understandable following the rise of the new government, especially due to certain "factions."

"Israel may have felt fear," Marwan said, referring to the series of Israeli airstrikes targeting strategic military installations in Syria after the regime's collapse. Israel’s actions have included airstrikes in Syria and the seizure of parts of the Golan Heights, raising fears about the potential for annexation. Despite these tensions, Marwan described Israel's fears as "natural" in the context of the evolving political landscape.

However, Marwan made it clear that Syria’s stance was not one of aggression. "We have no fear towards Israel, and our problem is not with Israel," he stated firmly. He emphasized that Syria’s government does not wish to interfere in matters that would threaten Israel’s security or the security of any other country, a sentiment in line with President al-Sharaa's previously expressed desire to avoid conflict with Israel.

Marwan took his position a step further, calling on the United States to play a role in facilitating improved relations between Syria and Israel. "There exists a people who want coexistence. They want peace. They don’t want disputes,” Marwan said, underscoring the new Syrian government's commitment to peace and stability.

Marwan’s comments represent a significant shift in Syria’s foreign policy, indicating a willingness to engage in diplomacy with Israel and potentially reshape the region's geopolitical dynamics. He urged the international community, including the US, to assist in fostering an environment conducive to peace, signaling a departure from past hostilities.

While Marwan refrained from discussing Palestinian issues or the ongoing conflict in Gaza, his remarks align with President al-Sharaa’s stance that Syria does not seek conflict with Israel, and he expressed hope for a future where both nations can coexist peacefully.
