Trump lands in Switzerland for Davos summit following aircraft change
US President Donald Trump has landed in Switzerland after hours of delay caused by a minor electrical issue aboard Air Force One, which forced a return to Washington to switch aircraft.
Trump is set to address the World Economic Forum in Davos, where his ambitions to wrest control of Greenland from NATO ally Denmark could strain relations with European partners and overshadow his plans to focus on U.S. affordability issues, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
The president recently threatened tariffs on Denmark and seven other allies unless they negotiate a transfer of the semi-autonomous territory — a move European leaders have rejected.
The tariffs would start at 10% next month and rise to 25% in June, rates that “would be high enough to increase costs and slow growth, potentially hurting Trump’s efforts to tamp down the high cost of living,” said Scott Lincicome, vice president on economic issues at the Cato Institute.
Trump also linked his stance on Greenland to last year’s Nobel Peace Prize decision, telling Norway’s prime minister, Jonas Gahr Støre, that he no longer felt “an obligation to think purely of Peace.”
On Tuesday, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told a Davos panel: “Globalization has failed the West and the United States of America. It’s a failed policy.” Trump said as he departed the White House: “I have no idea what's going to happen, but you are well represented.”
The president’s trip got off to a rocky start when a small electrical problem on Air Force One forced the plane to turn around, delaying arrival by several hours. Wall Street wobbled in response to his tariff threats, with the S&P 500 falling 2.1%, the Dow dropping 1.8%, and the Nasdaq sliding 2.4%.
