Ceuta border crisis death toll rises to 100, leader of Spanish enclave says

06 August 2026 18:06

Around 100 people died during last week's mass border rush into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, the city's leader, Juan Jesús Vivas, has said.

During a meeting of the European Parliament, he confirmed that between 3,000 and 5,000 migrants remain in Ceuta following the large-scale border crossing, Caliber.Az reports, citing Reuters.

Spain's Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration has approved an extraordinary funding package of nearly €6.5 million to strengthen humanitarian assistance and reception services for the migrants in the autonomous city as authorities respond to mounting pressure on the enclave's reception facilities.

The ministry made it clear that the additional funding will reinforce existing reception mechanisms and ensure the continued provision of social and healthcare services for migrants staying at the Temporary Immigrant Reception Centre (CETI) and in surrounding areas, with particular attention given to those considered most vulnerable.
