Did Israel hack Hezbollah's network to kill military commander? WSJ explains

19 August 2024 09:57

Israel may have hacked the internal communication network of the Shiite movement Hezbollah to eliminate one of the commanders of its military wing, Fuad Shukr, Caliber.Az reports, citing The Wall Street Journal.

Shukr was killed on July 30 as a result of an Israeli strike on the southern suburb of Dahiya in Beirut, which serves as a stronghold for Hezbollah.

According to the publication's source, on that day, Shukr was working in an office on the second floor. His apartment was located in the same building, five floors above. In the evening, he received a call asking him to come up to the seventh floor. The call was made possible by hacking into the movement’s internal communication network. The purpose of the request was to "lure Shukr" to a position more suitable for an Israeli attack.

Hezbollah and Iran are investigating the circumstances of their intelligence failure, The Wall Street Journal adds.

Israel believes that Shukr was directly responsible for the July 27 attack on the Druze village of Majdal Shams, located in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights. One of the rockets, reportedly launched from southern Lebanon, exploded on a soccer field in Majdal Shams, killing 12 children and injuring around 30 others. Israeli authorities blamed Lebanon and Hezbollah for the incident, promising a harsh response. The Shiite movement denied involvement in the incident.
