Dispute between Netflix, Georgian chess player Nona Gaprindashvili ends with settlement
According to media reports, the dispute between Netflix and Nona Gaprindashvili ended with a settlement.
However, the terms of the agreement were not made public. A Netflix spokesperson told Axios that the company is "pleased that the issue has been resolved," Interpressnews reports.
The lawsuit refers to the phrase voiced in the TV series "The Queen's Gambit" that Nona Gaprindashvili has never faced a male chess player. Gafrindashvili's lawsuit states that the comment is "blatantly false, grossly sexist and derogatory" and that Netflix deliberately lied about Gaprindashvili's accomplishments in a cheap and cynical way to emphasize that its fictional character has managed to do things that other women, including Gaprindashvili, have not.
According to the media, Nona Gafrindashvili demanded 5 million dollars from the company as compensation, as well as cutting out a specific section from the TV series.
