Drone falls in Romania’s Suceava County, schools suspended

A drone was found in a forest near the town of Solca in Romania’s Suceava County on the morning of September 24, prompting local authorities to suspend classes at schools in four nearby settlements until 10:00 a.m., Romanian media reported.

The drone had entered Romanian airspace and remained there for about four minutes before falling near Solca, according to Romania’s Defence Ministry. The ministry said the incident caused no casualties or material damage and that no fire broke out at the crash site.

“The aerial target was in national airspace for approximately four minutes before falling near the town of Solca, Suceava County, causing no casualties or material damage,” the Defence Ministry said.

The discovery came after heightened aerial activity near Romania’s border with Ukraine overnight. Romanian authorities scrambled fighter jets in response to drone activity in the area, while two F-18 aircraft operated by Spain’s Air and Space Force took off to monitor the situation.

The incidents occurred amid continued drone activity linked to the war in neighbouring Ukraine. Earlier on September 24, Moldova also reported several violations of its airspace by aerial objects entering from Ukraine’s Odesa, Chernivtsi and Vinnytsia regions.

The Romanian authorities’ decision to suspend school classes was taken as a precaution while the situation was assessed and the site of the drone’s fall was secured.
