Dutch F-35s shoot down Russian Shahed drones over Poland

Dutch F-35 fighter jets deployed in Poland have successfully intercepted and shot down Russian Shahed drones earlier this month, the Dutch Defence Ministry confirmed.

Defensie.nl published a photograph showing a fighter jet with a marking of a Russian attack drone on its fuselage as evidence.

During a visit to the F-35 detachment in Poland, Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans praised the operation, calling it a demonstration of “professionalism and team spirit.” He stressed that not only the pilots but also technicians and ground personnel played a crucial role in enabling the historic mission.

The Dutch F-35s have been stationed in Poland since September 1 to strengthen NATO’s eastern defences and protect allied airspace. The mission marks the first time Dutch F-35s have used weapons in active defence, highlighting the growing role of the Netherlands in NATO’s deterrence posture against Russia.

From December, the Netherlands will further bolster air defence in Poland by deploying Patriot missile systems, NASAMS, and specialised anti-drone systems to protect key logistical hubs supporting Ukraine.

Brekelmans underlined that “the eastern border of NATO is also our security border,” emphasising the Netherlands’ readiness to act alongside allies to defend the alliance.
