Dutch Navy sends air-defence frigate on Mediterranean mission
The Netherlands will deploy an air-defence and command frigate to the eastern Mediterranean to support regional security efforts and help protect allied countries from potential attacks linked to tensions with Iran.
According to NOS, the Dutch government informed parliament of the planned deployment in a letter outlining the mission.
The frigate HNLMS Evertsen will be sent to the eastern Mediterranean following a request for assistance from France. The vessel will support the protection of regional partners, including Cyprus and NATO ally Türkiye.
The mission will also involve helping secure ships operating alongside the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle.
Dutch Defence Minister Dilan Yeşilgöz‑Zegerius said the deployment is defensive and primarily intended to deter potential threats while supporting allies in the region. She acknowledged that the operation carries certain risks but said the crew is prepared to handle additional tasks if necessary.
The frigate carries a crew of about 170 personnel and is equipped to detect and intercept aerial threats, including drones and missiles.
The deployment is expected to last several weeks, until early April, with tactical command exercised by the French carrier strike group operating in the area.
