Earthquake hits Spain’s Granada, damaging homes, cars VIDEO

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck the southern Spanish city of Granada early on August 15, damaging homes and vehicles but causing no reported injuries, authorities said.

The earthquake struck the metropolitan area of Alhendín shortly after 1 a.m. local time, according to officials, Reuters reports.

Spanish television channel TVE showed debris scattered across streets and damage to several cars in Granada, a popular tourist destination. Emergency services in Andalusia also rescued several people from damaged buildings.

Antonio Sanz Cabello, vice-president of the Andalusian regional government, said authorities had declared an emergency following the earthquake.

“If you're in Granada, you've felt the earthquake, you're okay, and your home shows no damage, stay calm and avoid entering and exiting buildings unnecessarily,” he said in a post on X.

“On the street, stay away from facades, cornices, balconies, walls, and other elements that could fall.”

Authorities were assessing the damage across the affected area, while emergency teams continued responding to reports of damaged buildings.
