Economy minister says no risk of fuel shortages in Germany
Germany’s Economy Minister Katherina Reiche has sought to reassure the public that the country’s energy security remains intact despite heightened tensions involving Iran.
In an interview with Focus magazine, Reiche said it was important to communicate clearly that Germany’s fuel and gas supplies were secure, adding that there was no risk of an energy shortage.
Her comments come amid concerns over low gas reserves. Capital magazine recently reported that, following the winter season, Germany’s gas storage facilities were unusually depleted for this time of year, with levels at around 22%.
At the same time, escalating tensions in the Middle East have driven up energy prices across Germany. On March 10, the price of E10 petrol surpassed two euros per litre for the first time since 2022, while diesel prices climbed close to record highs last seen four years ago.
