Egypt calls for restraint as US-Iran tensions escalate

07 April 2026 14:34

Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty has urged restraint in the escalating tensions between Iran and the United States, warning of a “catastrophic scenario” as he held a series of talks with regional and international counterparts.

According to an official statement, Abdelatty emphasized that Egypt is working to “defuse tensions and avoid a catastrophic scenario that no party would be spared from.” He stressed “the importance of prioritizing dialogue and diplomacy to reach a deal that achieves calm,” calling for concerted efforts to contain the situation, Iran International reports.

As part of diplomatic efforts, Abdelatty held discussions with Iraq’s Foreign Minister, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister, US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, and a United Nations representative to assess progress toward understanding and de-escalation between Washington and Tehran.

The talks also addressed broader implications of the conflict, including its impact on global shipping routes, supply chains, food security, and energy markets. Rising oil prices and disruptions linked to the crisis have further underscored the urgency of diplomatic engagement.

Abdelatty’s comments come amid increasing international concern over the potential for the Middle East conflict to spill over, affecting regional stability and global economic security.

He reiterated that dialogue remains the most viable path forward, underlining Egypt’s commitment to helping mediate tensions and prevent further escalation.
