Egypt postpones Arab summit to March 4 for logistical preparations Focuses on “Safe Zones”

19 February 2025 21:49

Egypt is finalizing a comprehensive plan for the reconstruction of Gaza, which includes the establishment of "safe zones" for Palestinians, following the postponement of an emergency Arab summit originally scheduled for later this month.

The summit, initially set for February 27, will now take place on March 4, according to Egypt’s Foreign Ministry, which confirmed the new date, Caliber.Az reports per Arab media.

The decision was made in coordination with Bahrain, the current president of the Arab League summit, and after consultations with other Arab nations.

In a statement, the ministry explained that the delay was due to the need for further logistical and substantive preparations. "The new date will ensure the highest possible turnout of Arab leaders," said Hossam Zaki, Assistant Secretary-General of the Arab League, in a televised interview on Sunday.

The call for the emergency summit follows controversial remarks by former US President Donald Trump, who suggested controlling Gaza and relocating its residents, particularly to Egypt and Jordan. His proposal sparked widespread condemnation across the region, with Arab nations strongly rejecting any forced displacement.

In response, Egypt is preparing to present a comprehensive reconstruction proposal for Gaza, focused on ensuring that Palestinians remain in their homeland. "Our plan prioritizes the preservation of Palestinian presence on the ground," said an official from Egypt’s Foreign Ministry. "This plan is being coordinated with Arab states and international partners."

Al-Ahram newspaper reported that Egypt's reconstruction vision involves clearing debris and restoring Gaza’s infrastructure in a rapid timeframe, with Egyptian and international companies playing a key role. Cairo has also called for an international conference on Gaza’s reconstruction, stressing that the damage caused by the recent conflict requires tens of billions of dollars in aid.

As the reconstruction plan takes shape, Egypt’s approach remains grounded in practicality and action, ensuring that Palestinians are supported and able to stay in Gaza as the area is rebuilt.
