Egypt signals readiness to boost troop presence in Sinai
Egypt has warned Israel that it will increase its troop deployment along the Gaza border if a mass migration of Palestinians from the enclave takes place, Al Akhbar reported, citing unnamed sources.
According to the publication, Cairo has made it clear that within 72 hours of such an event, it would double the number of troops stationed on the border and deploy heavy weapons and helicopters in the Sinai Peninsula.
Under the terms of the Egypt-Israel peace treaty, any reinforcement of troops or transfer of heavy weaponry into Sinai requires Israel’s approval.
An Egyptian military source told the newspaper that this step would serve as a deterrent, signalling that Egypt is firmly opposed to any attempt by Israel to forcibly resettle Gaza residents across the border.
