Elections in Ukraine to be held only after conflict resolution – head of president’s office says

05 December 2024 17:54

Andriy Yermak, the head of the office of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has stated that presidential and parliamentary elections in Ukraine can only take place once the ongoing conflict is resolved.

In an interview with the Telegraph, Yermak emphasized that the current situation in the country makes it impossible to create the necessary conditions for voting, Caliber.Az reports.

“President Zelenskyy is ready to hold elections at any moment, but he has always made it clear that several crucial factors need to be met,” Yermak explained.

"First, the elections must be recognized internationally as meeting democratic standards. Second, it is vital that all Ukrainian citizens, including soldiers and those temporarily outside the country, have the opportunity to vote."

Yermak further highlighted that the government is currently prioritizing defence spending, particularly for the army and military equipment, and called for continued assistance from international partners.

"It is essential that all these conditions are fulfilled — not just one per cent of them. Given the current situation, President Zelenskyy has made it clear that elections can only be held once a just peace has been achieved," Yermak concluded.
