President of Türkiye, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has welcomed Syria’s acting president, Ahmad al-Sharaa, in Ankara for high-level discussions.
The two leaders commenced their meeting on February 4, at the Presidential Complex in Ankara, Caliber.Az reports via Turkish media.
As part of his official visit, al-Sharaa is expected to join President Erdoğan for a joint press conference and later attend a business dinner at the invitation of the Turkish leader.
Note that, Ahmed al-Sharaa has been appointed president for Syria’s "transitional period," seven weeks after leading the rebel offensive that toppled Bashar al-Assad.
Rebel military commander Hassan Abdul Ghani announced the abolition of Syria’s 2012 constitution and the dissolution of the former regime’s parliament, army, and security forces.
As transitional president, Sharaa will establish an interim legislative council to oversee governance until a new constitution is adopted. He also stated that all rebel groups that opposed Assad throughout the 13-year civil war would be disbanded and incorporated into state institutions.
The declarations were made during a gathering in Damascus on January 29, attended by commanders of various factions that fought alongside the rebel alliance led by Sharaa’s Islamist group, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). The event was titled the "Conference for Announcing the Victory of the Syrian Revolution."
