EU chief to skip inaugural Board of Peace session over Charter concerns
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will not attend the inaugural session of the Board of Peace initiative launched by US President Donald Trump, scheduled for February 19.
The announcement was made by European Commission spokesperson Anouar El Anouni, Caliber.Az reports, citing Ukrainian media.
“President von der Leyen did indeed receive an invitation to the Board of Peace meeting to be held on February 19. Our position remains unchanged and has been very clear from the outset: we have a number of questions regarding certain elements of the Board of Peace Charter, related to its scope, governance, and compatibility with the UN Charter,” he stated.
El Anouni nevertheless underscored the European Union’s willingness to cooperate closely with the United States on the implementation of a comprehensive peace plan for Gaza. In this framework, the proposed Board of Peace would function as a transitional administration in line with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2803.
“We are actively engaging with the United States to jointly achieve this goal,” the spokesperson added.
