EU Council President Charles Michel's phone call to three Turkic leaders What is EU concerned about?
An Azerbaijani political analyst has explained EU Council President Charles Michel's phone call to three Turkic leaders on the same day with certain EU concerns over issues within the organisation's interest.
Political analyst Fikrat Sadikhov made the remarks in an interview with the Baku-based news website Bizim.Media to comment on Michel's phone call to the Azerbaijani, Uzbek and Kazakh presidents on July 4.
"The European Union pays close attention to the developments in the post-Soviet space. The Azerbaijani president and the Armenian prime minister met several times in Brussels, thanks to the mediation of Charles Michel. Against the backdrop of the meeting, the parties discussed a number of serious issues," he said.
The expert noted that certain steps have even been taken to solve them.
"The work done in the direction of the Brussels negotiations and the implementation of the agreements reached, Armenia's efforts to continue to create certain problems, and other points are of course in the interest of Charles Michel as a mediator," Sadikhov added.
The analyst assumed that "in his phone call, Michel made new proposals regarding [Armenian-Azerbaijani] border opening [as written, presumably delimitation] and the peace agreement, which appear to be in the best interests of the institution itself".
As for phone calls to the Uzbek and Kazakh leaders, Sadikhov said that this is a result of his concern over the recent processes in Central Asia.
"Separatists have raised their heads in Uzbekistan. The EU, of course, cannot be interested in such a threat. The EU is also concerned about the process. Kazakhstan, on the other hand, emerged from the crisis after a series of complex processes. Kazakhstan's president has stated unequivocally that he will not recognise the post-Soviet separatist regimes. In light of this, the EU is keeping a close eye on the ongoing processes in Kazakhstan," he said.
