EU leaders arrive in Moldova to mark Independence Day, support pro-European path
French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk arrived in Moldova to attend Independence Day celebrations and express strong backing for President Maia Sandu's pro-European government ahead of the country’s pivotal parliamentary elections scheduled for September 28.
The high-profile visit was confirmed by Igor Zakharov, spokesperson for President Sandu, and is widely seen as a strategic show of support from key EU states at a time when Moldova seeks to solidify its Euro-Atlantic trajectory amid ongoing regional tensions and Russian influence in Eastern Europe, Caliber.Az reports.
The three European leaders are expected to deliver joint public remarks during a celebration in central Chișinău, where a concert is planned as part of the Independence Day festivities. Their speeches will likely underscore the European Union’s commitment to Moldova’s democratic development, sovereignty, and reform path.
The three EU leaders gave a press statement alongside Sandu before a dinner.
Macron, Merz and Tusk want to reaffirm their "support for Moldova's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity", a French presidential adviser told journalists. They also want to support Moldova's "European trajectory".
