EU removes sanctions on LNG vessels following break with Russian projects

22 July 2025 19:57

The European Union has lifted sanctions on three liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers previously linked to the transport of Russian energy, following assurances from their Japanese operator that the vessels will no longer be used for such activities, the European Commission announced.

The tankers—North Moon, North Ocean, and North Light—were managed by Japan’s Mitsui O.S.K. Lines and had previously been involved in the transport of LNG from Russia’s Yamal LNG plant. The vessels had also conducted ship-to-ship transfer operations near the northern Russian port of Murmansk, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

The delisting forms part of the EU's 18th sanctions package targeting Russia in response to its continued military aggression against Ukraine.

According to the European Commission, the decision to lift restrictions was made after receiving “firm commitments” that the tankers would permanently cease any involvement with Russian energy exports—specifically those originating from the Yamal and Arctic LNG 2 projects, for which the vessels were initially commissioned.

“This action demonstrates the impact of EU vessel designations, and that vessels can be returned to service following firm commitments,” the Commission stated on its official website.

All three tankers were constructed in 2024 at South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean shipyard and are equipped to handle operations in extreme Arctic conditions.
