EU seeks rapid progress on Moldova accession talks, Kallas says
The European Union is aiming to move quickly on Moldova’s path towards membership, though no formal date has been set for opening accession talks, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said on May 8.
Speaking alongside Moldovan President Maia Sandu in Chisinau, Kallas said the EU was ready to accelerate the process amid a shifting political landscape in Europe, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
“We haven't set that date, but it's clear that we need to move fast,” Kallas told a joint press conference, adding that recent government changes in several countries had opened a window of opportunity.
“So that's why I also think that we should move while nobody is against Moldova, because you never know when there comes a government that might have, you know, a bilateral issue."
Kallas also said Moldova had made meaningful progress on reforms and suggested that the breakaway region of Transdniestria “will not become an obstacle” to the country’s EU ambitions.
Sandu reiterated Moldova’s commitment to signing an accession treaty by 2028, underscoring Chisinau’s long-term goal of EU membership.
