EU set to approve 16th sanctions package against Russia
The European Union is set to agree on the 16th package of sanctions against Russia during a key meeting on February 19.
The package will introduce further restrictive measures in response to Russia's actions that have contributed to destabilizing the situation in Ukraine, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.
The EU Council is expected to approve the new set of sanctions, including measures targeting individuals and entities linked to Russia’s ongoing aggression. Additionally, the sanctions will extend to Belarus, in connection with its support of Russia's actions.
Paula Pinho, European Commission Chief Spokesperson, confirmed that the EU intends to continue its policy of imposing sanctions on Russia, regardless of the evolving dynamics surrounding the Ukrainian conflict. The ongoing sanctions strategy underscores the EU's commitment to pressuring Russia to end its destabilizing activities in Ukraine.
On February 12, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán criticized the European Union's policies, asserting that they do not align with the interests of European citizens, particularly in relation to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Orbán claimed that the majority of people in Europe desire peace, while EU leadership is focused on pursuing a "war against Russia."
Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also commented on the situation, stating that the EU economy is in a "deplorable state."
