EU signals readiness to support Gaza reconstruction, stresses UN framework
The European Union is prepared to participate in rebuilding the Gaza Strip, aligning its efforts with relevant UN Security Council resolutions, said Anouar El Anouni, Spokesperson for EU Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
Speaking in Brussels, El Anouni said the European Commission intends to mobilise all available instruments to bolster humanitarian relief and reconstruction efforts, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
He underlined that the bloc views the reconstruction of Gaza as essential for enabling Palestinians to live in conditions of security, rule of law and economic revival.
The EU’s approach is anchored in Security Council Resolution 2803, which establishes the Council of Peace as a coordinating framework for development funding for Gaza, ensuring that assistance is delivered coherently and in line with international legal standards.
El Anouni also reiterated that, under existing UN Security Council resolutions, Israel and Palestine are expected to coexist as two democratic states in conditions of peace and security.
He added that the EU is open to working with Egypt on preparations for a future conference on Gaza’s reconstruction once the necessary conditions are in place.
He further recalled the European Council’s call for Israel to release funds required for the functioning of Palestinian institutions, restore banking links and facilitate essential services for the population.
