EU to impose sanctions on Iran over freedom of navigation violations

The European Union will for the first time impose sanctions on Iran over violations related to freedom of navigation, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has said.

Speaking ahead of an informal meeting of EU defence ministers, Kallas warned against further escalation in the region.

“It will be the first time where the freedom of navigation sanctions will be applied on Iran,” she said.

EU foreign policy chief stressed that the region does not need escalation and called on all sides to return to negotiations.

Kallas added that ministers will also discuss possible additional measures within the EU naval operation Operation ASPIDES in the region.
