Europe red flags Ukraine as Russian strikes intensify

31 August 2026 12:30

The United States and several European countries have tightened or maintained their travel advisories for Ukraine amid intensified Russian airstrikes, warning citizens of security risks and potential disruptions to essential services.

On August 28, the US State Department updated its guidance while retaining its highest Level 4: Do Not Travel warning, advising Americans against traveling to Ukraine for any reason due to the ongoing war. Washington also noted that the US Embassy’s ability to assist citizens outside Kyiv remains limited, Caliber.Az reports, citing Ukrainian media.

The Netherlands has designated the entire country a red zone, advising against all travel. Dutch citizens already in Ukraine are urged to leave if they can do so safely, while the embassy warns that its ability to provide emergency assistance may be limited.

Italy is also strongly advising against travel and urging citizens who remain in Ukraine to follow air raid alerts and immediately seek shelter.

The UK is maintaining restrictions on travel to several regions, while recommending departure from areas where travel is prohibited if it is safe. London has warned of growing Russian military activity, including thousands of drones and more than 100 missiles launched monthly in recent months.

The UK and Germany have also highlighted the risk of prolonged disruptions to electricity, heating, water, communications and transport during the winter. Temperatures in parts of Ukraine can fall below -20°C.

Germany continues to warn that missile and drone attacks can occur nationwide, including in western regions. The latest advisories come amid continued Russian strikes targeting energy facilities, transport hubs, logistics centres and other civilian infrastructure across Ukraine.
