European Commission urges EU states to expand nuclear energy strategy
The European Commission has, for the first time in a decade, called on EU member states to develop not only “green” energy but also nuclear power, amid the crisis surrounding Iran, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said at a press conference in Brussels.
She stated that the countries were paying an excessive price for excessive dependence on carbon fuels and that carbon resources would become the most expensive option in the coming years. Ursula von der Leyen added that the countries had all the necessary possibilities to produce green and nuclear energy in Europe and that they would implement that strategy.
She urged EU countries to move in this direction and to accelerate the electrification of the European economy, including transport systems and heating.
