European nations unite for Ukraine with billions in new aid pledges
A wave of international support for Ukraine has gained momentum, with several nations announcing record-breaking aid packages.
Thus, the United Kingdom led the charge, unveiling its largest-ever military aid package for Ukraine, worth £4.5 billion (approximately $5.69 billion), Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer made the announcement during the "Support Ukraine" summit, emphasising the importance of strengthening Ukraine to secure a lasting peace. "We must do more to ensure a prolonged peace, not just a pause in this war. By increasing military support, the UK is providing more aid than ever before," Starmer stated.
Denmark followed suit with a new aid package valued at 2 billion Danish kroner ($280 million). The funds will support Ukraine with ammunition and contribute to the formation of a joint brigade with other Scandinavian and Baltic nations. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, visiting Kyiv, reiterated the country's unwavering commitment, saying, "We will support Ukraine as long as it takes, and now more than ever, we need to act decisively—delivering weapons faster and supporting the Ukrainian defence industry."
Spain also made a significant pledge, with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announcing a €1 billion military aid package. In a post shared on social media, Sánchez reaffirmed Spain’s dedication to ensuring a just and lasting peace for Ukraine, stressing that unity and strength were critical to ending the conflict. "This aid package is vital for the freedom and security of all Europeans," he wrote.
Norway, in a similar move, committed €3.5 billion in aid for Ukraine in 2025, with a focus on humanitarian assistance, energy, and industrial development. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, speaking in Kyiv, said that €1 billion would go toward humanitarian aid, while €300 million would support energy initiatives and another €300 million would help boost Ukraine’s industrial sector. "Norway will continue to allocate all possible resources to support Ukraine," he affirmed.
Finally, Canada added its support with a major military aid announcement. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau revealed that Canada would send 25 infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) and millions of rounds of ammunition to Ukraine. Additionally, Canada will provide €5 billion as part of a loan, which will be repaid using funds from frozen Russian central bank assets. This pledge underscores Canada's ongoing commitment to Ukraine’s defence.
