Israel intercepts Global Sumud Flotilla, prompting Türkiye to launch probe VIDEO / PHOTO

02 October 2025 10:21

The Israeli Foreign Ministry stated that the Global Sumud flotilla was heading for the Gaza coast with the aim of provocation, not to provide aid.

“The sole purpose of the Hamas-Sumud flotilla is provocation. Israel, Italy, Greece, and the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem have all offered and continue to offer the flotilla a way to peacefully deliver any aid they might have to Gaza. The flotilla refused because they are not interested in aid, but in provocation,” Caliber.Az quotes the Ministry as saying on X.

“The Israeli Navy has reached out to the Hamas-Sumud flotilla and asked them to change course. Israel has informed the flotilla that it is approaching an active combat zone and violating a lawful naval blockade. Israel reiterated the offer to transfer any aid peacefully through safe channels to Gaza,” the ministry said.

In another post on X, the Israeli Foreign Ministry announces the detention of several activists.

“Already several vessels of the Hamas-Sumud flotilla have been safely stopped and their passengers are being transferred to an Israeli port. Greta and her friends are safe and healthy,” the post reads.

The Foreign Ministry also released footage of Greta Thunberg's detention as she was being taken to the port of Ashdod.

Meanwhile, the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation into the detention of 24 Turkish citizens in international waters following an interception by Israeli naval forces on the Global Sumud Flotilla.

The prosecutor’s office stated that after the Israeli navy intercepted the flotilla, which was en route to Gaza to deliver humanitarian aid, a criminal case was opened regarding the detention of 24 Turkish nationals.

The investigation is being carried out under the provisions of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, jurisdiction rules set out in Article 15 of Türkiye’s Code of Criminal Procedure, as well as Articles 12 and 13 of the Turkish Penal Code. The case has been opened on charges of “unlawful deprivation of liberty,” “seizure or retention of means of transport,” “aggravated robbery,” “intentional damage to property,” and “torture.”
