Uganda declared Ebola-free after latest outbreak ends

Uganda has officially been declared free of Ebola after containing its latest outbreak, Health Minister Chris Baryomunsi announced on July 28.

The outbreak, which was declared in mid-May, infected 20 people and claimed two lives, according to Ugandan health authorities.

According to British media, fifteen of the infections were linked to neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo, the epicentre of the wider Ebola epidemic, where more than 3,000 confirmed cases have been recorded.

Announcing the end of the outbreak, Baryomunsi said the country had not detected any new cases following weeks of heightened monitoring.

"Throughout ⁠this period the ministry of health maintained intensive surveillance nationwide and ⁠no new Ebola cases have been detected," Health ⁠Minister Chris Baryomunsi said.
