Macron: Confiscating Russian assets would breach international law
French President Emmanuel Macron cautioned that frozen Russian assets in Europe cannot simply be seized to fund a “reparations loan” for Ukraine, arguing that such action would breach international law.
His remarks come in response to a European Commission proposal aimed at channelling Russian state-held funds toward Ukraine’s reconstruction, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
Speaking to reporters, Macron emphasised the need to respect established legal frameworks, stating that “the assets cannot simply be confiscated, as that would violate international law.”
In a separate comment on France’s defence posture, Macron confirmed he will deliver a speech in early 2026 outlining updates to the country’s nuclear doctrine.
The announcement followed questions regarding recent moves to strengthen France’s air-based nuclear deterrent.
“The French nuclear umbrella exists. I am currently working on updating our doctrine, and I want to continue deepening our strategic dialogue with the Europeans who wish to engage,” he said, highlighting the country’s commitment to both national and collective security.
