Finland, Sweden join forces to track Russian military aircraft

Finnish and Swedish fighter jets have jointly identified Russian military aircraft for the first time as part of deepening defence cooperation between the two countries.

The Finnish Air Force said on September 25, that the aircraft were identified in international airspace over the Gulf of Finland, Yle reports.

“The deepening cooperation that began this autumn enables joint operational flights for identification purposes and allows fighter jets on standby to be stationed at bases in the other country,” said Vesa Mäntylä, Assistant to the Commander of the Finnish Air Force.

Swedish Air Force Commander Major General Jonas Wikman said the countries’ long-standing cooperation had enabled the joint operation to proceed seamlessly.
