Finnish president urges EU powers to reopen talks with Russia
European countries should resume diplomatic contacts with Russia’s leadership, Finnish President Alexander Stubb has said.
“I believe it is long overdue for Europe to establish contact with the Russian leadership, more precisely with President [Vladimir] Putin, and to hold diplomatic talks,” Stubb said at a press conference in Helsinki, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
He added that he does not see himself as a negotiator with the Russian side, arguing instead that Europe’s interests should be represented by the E3 countries — France, Germany and the United Kingdom.
“Personally, I do not consider myself a suitable candidate for this task. I believe it is important for major players such as France, Germany and Britain to take the initiative,” he emphasized.
