Fire breaks out at Japanese self-defence forces base near Tokyo

A major fire broke out at a Japan Self-Defence Forces (JSDF) base in Saitama Prefecture, north of Tokyo, prompting emergency crews to respond and local authorities to monitor the situation.

According to Japan’s NHK broadcaster, thick black smoke was seen rising from the Asaka Ground Self-Defense Force base on the morning of July 20, alarming residents in nearby areas.

The Asaka base is located in the city of Asaka, on the border between Saitama Prefecture and Tokyo’s Nerima Ward. Firefighters were dispatched after receiving reports of heavy smoke coming from the military facility.

Reports said the fire originated in a landfill area inside the base. Emergency crews were working to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to administrative buildings and residential areas located within the facility.

Authorities have advised nearby residents to avoid the area while firefighting operations continue and until the fire is fully extinguished.
