Firefighting efforts intensify as wildfires rage for sixth day in Syria's Latakia

12 May 2025 19:46

Efforts to contain the wildfires sweeping through the Rabia area of Jabal Turkman in the northern Latakia countryside have entered their sixth consecutive day, as Syrian authorities ramp up deployments of manpower and equipment to battle the flames.

According to Abdul Kafi Kayal, Director of the Civil Defence Directorate on the Syrian coast, fire brigades are facing significant challenges in extinguishing the fires, which continue to erupt in new hotspots due to strong winds, Caliber.Az reports per Syrian media.

The situation is further complicated by the rugged terrain, limited access to water sources, and the vast spread of the fires across forested areas.

“Despite the difficult conditions, reinforcements in the form of firefighting teams, water tankers, personnel, and equipment continue to arrive at the scene,” Kayal said on May 12. “Our teams are working tirelessly to contain the flames and stop their advance.”

The official noted a marked improvement in response capabilities after new access roads were opened in the area, allowing fire brigades to divide the zone into sectors. This has enabled more efficient targeting of active fire zones and prevented the fires from reaching neighboring villages.

The affected area has now expanded to approximately 40 hectares, up from 30 hectares reported earlier.

Syrian helicopters have also been deployed as part of the aerial firefighting effort.
