Former Japanese FM Hayashi throws hat in ring for ruling party leadership

03 September 2024 20:13

Yoshimasa Hayashi, former Foreign Minister of Japan and current Chief Cabinet Secretary, has officially announced his intention to become the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).

This, in turn, would mean that he is vying for the position of the next Prime Minister of the country, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.

At a press conference held at the Diet Building, Hayashi officially announced his intention to run in the upcoming presidential election for his party.

Emphasizing a vision for the future, he stated, "Toward a brighter future, I would like to conduct people-friendly politics that will give all citizens peace of mind."

His declaration marks a significant move in the party's leadership race, as he pledges to focus on policies aimed at enhancing the well-being and security of all citizens.

Hayashi also stressed that, if elected, he would dedicate himself to rebuilding trust in the party and its members, which has been damaged by the financial reporting irregularities scandal. He also reiterated his apology on behalf of the party for the incident.

He previously served as Foreign Minister from November 2021 to September 2023 and is regarded as a close ally of the current Prime Minister, Fumio Kishida.
